Ptialin enzyme is an enzyme found in saliva. In addition to playing a role in the digestive process in the mouth, the enzyme ptialin is also believed to be an indicator to show the presence of chronic stress and cancer. Ptialin enzymes are included in the amylase enzyme group which is responsible for breaking down starch or carbohydrates into sugars. This breakdown process occurs through biochemical processes to produce oligosaccharide and maltose sugars. This sugar will then be used as a source of energy for the body.

Ptialin Enzyme Function

This enzyme, which is classified as a digestive enzyme, has many functions. Some of them are:

1. Support the digestion process

One of the most common components found in saliva is the ptialin enzyme. Saliva is likened to a home for ptialin in charge of expediting the digestion process. The presence of this enzyme also allows starches in food to be digested. If the production of the ptialin enzyme is disrupted, the nutrients in food and drink cannot be absorbed properly by the intestine.

2. Being an indicator of stress

Based on the results of several studies, it is known that stressful and stressful situations can increase the production of amylase and ptialin enzymes in the body. Compared to people who are not stressed, people who are under psychological stress or stress appear to produce a much higher ptialin enzyme. Conversely, if someone can calm down after facing stress, then the production of ptialin in the body will be reduced. It is not yet clear why stress can cause an increase in the ptialin enzyme, but it is thought this has happened because of an increase in stress hormones, namely cortisol and adrenaline.

3. Being an indicator of cancer

According to one study, the amount of ptialin enzymes in cancer patients is higher than in healthy people. This is thought to be related to the inflammatory response in the body to fight cancer cells. However, the results of these studies have not been able to ascertain whether examination of the enzyme ptialin and amylase can be one way to diagnose cancer. Until now, the tests used to diagnose cancer are still in the form of biopsies, blood tests, X-rays, MRI, or CT-scan. The benefits of ptialin enzymes that have been proven are digestive enzymes that function to digest carbohydrates. While the benefits of ptialin enzyme as a determinant of stress and cancer still need to be studied further.
